Wichita State’s bats erupted Saturday and Cale Elam won his third straight game as the Shockers pounded host UC-Santa Barbara 16-5.

The Gauchos, ranked 20th by Collegiate Baseball, suffered their worst loss of the season. UCSB fell to 12-3 while WSU improved to 11-5.

Elam was brilliant through six innings, blanking UCSB on two hits before surrendering a pair of runs in the seventh.

The Shockers opened the rout in the third when Dayne Parker drove in two runs with a double.

But the Shocks left no doubt with a seven-run fifth, WSU’s second-most productive inning this season.

After an out, Parker singled and so did Casey Gillaspie and Garrett Bayliff. Bayliff’s single drove in Parker. Tyler Baker walked, and Micah Green hit a two-run bases-loaded single to drive in Gillaspie and Bayliff. Chase Simpson followed with his first homer of the season, a three-run shot.

WSU added five more in the eighth. Baker’s three-run homer, his first of the season, highlighted the inning.

Notes: WSU has committed two errors in its last three games, both by shortstop Tanner Kirk.… Sam Tewes (3-1, 2.70 ERA) will pitch for the Shockers on Sunday in the rubber match.… Starting pitchers have an ERA of 2.41 in the past eight games while relievers are 3.63 (nine earned runs in 22 1/3 innings).… Parker, elevated to the No. 2 spot in the batting order, responed with four hits and four RBIs. Bayliff, who had been batting second, was dropped to the clean-up spot.… Baker raised his average to .400 in the past eight games with a pair of hits.… Elam threw 99 pitches, 66 for strikes.… The 16 runs is the second-most game of the season.
