Wichita State’s five-game trip west got off on the wrong foot Friday in a 2-1 loss to Cal-Santa Barbara.

The Shockers were shut out for 8 1/3 innings, until Casey Gillaspie hammered a long homer to left-center to prevent WSU’s third scoreless game this season. WSU managed just five hits and a walk as Gauchos left-handed starter Justin Jacome improved to 3-0 and lowered his ERA to 1.30.

The loss overshadowed a good pitching performance by A.J. Ladwig (1-2), who went seven innings. He allowed three straight singles in the third, enabling Joey Epperson to score the first run of the game. Woody Woodward opened the sixth with a single, stole second and scored on Andrew Calica’s double.

The Shockers had a good chance to score in the sixth. Dayne Parker opened with a single, and Wes Phillips ran for him. Tanner Dearman sacrificed Phillips to second. Erik Harbutz struck out. Garrett Bayliff walked and Gillaspie then forced Bayliff at second with a ground ball to end the threat.

Notes: Leadoff hitters continue to slump for WSU. Although Harbutz did get a hit, leadoff hitters are 13 for 63 (.206) for the season. They are 4 for 27 (.148) in the last seven games.… Neither team made an error. WSU has four errorless games.… Bayliff and Chase Simpson saw their four-game hitting streaks end.… Cale Elam (2-0, 0.98 ERA) will pitch for WSU on Saturday.… Tyler Baker continued his hot hitting. The catcher got two hits and is 8 for 21 (.381) in his last six games.… Bayliff hit into some bad luck, lining into a double play in the first and two drives to center. Even going 0 for 3, he is hitting .385 in his last seven games (10 for 26).… UCSB (12-2) is ranked 20th by Collegiate Baseball.… It was WSU’s first true road loss of the season after three victories.… The loss also snapped WSU’s three-game winning streak.
