NAIA-II Friends wins NAIA-II second-round game, advances to quarterfinals

Friends beat Cornerstone (Mich.) 79-69 in the second round of the NAIA Division II men’s basketball tournament on Friday in Point Lookout, Mo.

Joe Mitchell scored 30 points and hit four three-pointers as the Falcons made 11 of 18 from three-point range.

Friends took command early, building a 38-20 lead with 3:58 left in the first half. Cornerstone scored the last nine points of the half, and cut Friends’ lead to five points on severeal occasions in the second half but never caught the Falcons.

Friends has reached the tournament quarterfinals for the first time in school history and will face Indiana Wesleyan at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Southwestern women 112, Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) 107 — Southwestern tied the NAIA Division II tournament record for points in a game, moves on to the quarterfinals for the first time in school history in Soux City, Iowa.

Southwestern’s 112 points tied the reccord set in 1997 by Briar Cliff (Iowa). The total of 219 points broke the tournament record for combined points in a game, 20 points more than Northern State (SD) and Panhandle State (Okla.) amassed in 1994.

Zefiryn Bryan scored a team-high 18 points to lead six Southwestern players in double figures.

The Moundbuilders will face unbeaten Saint Francis (Ind.) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
