In an effort to help business owners avoid violations and late fees, Secretary of State Kris Kobach has instituted a program of e-mail reminders when filing deadlines near.

Kobach’s office recently sent e-mails to 38,200 companies that file their business forms electronically, reminding them to file annual reports by the April 15 deadline.

Previously, companies would not have received a notice until after the deadline had been missed.

About five times as many businesses have filed their reports this month compared with the same month in previous years, Kobach aide Kay Curtis said in an e-mail.
