Authorities are fighting a rash of grass fires that ignited late Thursday afternoon in northeast Wichita.

A Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said the fires are being reported along areas of K-96 and I-135, mostly in the northern areas of the city. The first calls about the fires came in to 911 around 5 p.m., he said.

Fire crews from Sedgwick County, Wichita and possibly other area departments continued to fight the fires shortly after 6 p.m., the dispatch supervisor said. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area.
