— Police in the eastern Missouri town of Festus are searching for the thieves who stole nearly $2,000 worth of property from a man’s home while he attended the funeral of his son.

KMOV-TV reports that Gary Smith’s son, 38-year-old Gary Smith Jr., was laid to rest Saturday. The younger man died of injuries in an accident.

Gary Smith says many people know that his Festus home is filled with things he collects, including guns. Authorities believe the suspects waited for Smith to leave for the funeral before breaking into the home.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Col. Steve Meinberg says some thieves read obituaries and target relatives who are attending funerals.
