Teen shot in leg at birthday party near Pawnee and Meridian

A weekend birthday party nearly turned deadly Sunday morning, police said.

Dozens of people were gathered for the party at a house in the 2400 block of South St. Clair when several shots were fired at the house shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, Lt. Randy Reynolds said. One of the bullets hit a 17-year-old boy standing outside in the upper left thigh.

The victim, a documented gang member, was taken to a local hospital in “very critical” condition but has since stabilized, Reynolds said.

“Some members of a rival gang shot at the residence,” Reynolds said. “At this point, we don’t know if it was from a car or not. It appears there may have been some return fire.”

The incident may be the continuation of an ongoing gang feud, he said, but the house near Pawnee and Meridian in southwest Wichita has not been the scene of previous problems.

It’s not yet clear whether the victim was targeted or if he just happened to be hit by a bullet, Reynolds said.
