Wichita State University will host the 14th annual Lego Mindstorms Challenge on Saturday, according to a statement from WSU.

“When Wu Wish Upon a Brick” is a robotics competition for fourth- through eighth-grade students. It will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Heskett Center gymnasium. An award ceremony in Hubbard Hall starts at 3 p.m.

The event is sponsored by Spirit AeroSystems and WSU and is expected to attract 30 teams and more than 600 student competitors as well as spectators, many of the competitors coming from local schools.

Students spend months preparing for the Lego Mindstorms Challenge, developing their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills, as well as teamwork, sportsmanship and communication. On competition day, teams try to score the most points by running their robots through obstacle courses designed by College of Engineering students, the WSU statement said.

Competitors are required to demonstrate what they have learned through presentations, team displays and notebooks, the statement said. The events are free and open to the public.
