A person who tried to help a homeless man Thursday night ended up being stabbed numerous times and hospitalized, police said.

The victim, a 51-year-old man, met the suspect on South Broadway shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday and allowed him to come home with him to the 800 block of South Market, Doug Nolte said.

“He had never met him before,” Nolte said.

Once they reached the victim’s house a block south of Kellogg and a couple blocks west of Broadway, however, the suspect choked him and stabbed him 10 times before leaving. The victim was able to call for help and he was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

Nolte said the victim is expected to survive the attack. The suspect is a black man in his 40s, Nolte said. He is about 5-foot-7 and has a thin build. He wore dark-rimmed glasses and carried a red backpack.

The victim isn’t sure what he was stabbed with, Nolte said, and no weapon was found.
