Ten area businesses will compete for top honors in the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce Small Business Awards.
The finalists were chosen from a field of 21 nominees, which participated in Metro Mingle, a mini expo and social event, Wednesday afternoon at Newman University.
About 300 people attended the event, where the nominees had an opportunity to network and exhibit their products and services.
The Small Business Award competition, now in its 10th year and sponsored in part by The Wichita Eagle, includes a division for companies with 25 or fewer employees and a division for companies with 26 to 100 employees.
The Tier One – or smaller division – finalists are: Cassandra Bryan Design, Mize & Co., Kansas Truck Equipment Co., Chapple Insurance Group and Icon Structures.
The Tier Two finalists are: Zernco, Building Controls and Services, J.P. Weigand & Sons, Mid American Credit Union and Balco Inc.
“The Small Business Awards is committed to showcasing our community’s incredible small businesses,” said Gary Plummer, chairman president and CEO, in remarks made at the event. “Our focus at the Chamber in 2014 is on jobs and winning the jobs war. Small businesses are at the heart of job growth, here and across the nation. So it’s a wonderful time to be celebrating our 10th year of the Small Business Awards program.”
Criteria for the competition include financial performance, diversity and community involvement.
A winner in each tier will be announced at the Small Business Award luncheon, scheduled for May 7.
