A yellow Pontiac reportedly speeding down North Jackson on Wednesday afternoon slammed into a tree, killing the passenger and seriously injuring the driver, Wichita police said.

Lt. Alan Prince said witnesses, including a U.S. Postal Service carrier, reported seeing the car traveling south on Jackson “at a high rate of speed” just before the 3:30 p.m. crash along the residential street, near 21st and Broadway.

The driver “cleared the intersection at 22nd and Jackson, and he almost hit this mail carrier who was also (driving) southbound on Jackson,” Prince said.

“At that point, he lost control, swerved and hit the tree.”

The driver was taken to Via Christi St. Francis in critical condition for treatment after the crash, Prince said. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both men in the car are in their 40s, Prince said. He did not know whether they lived in the area. Their names were not released Wednesday afternoon.

The tree, in front of a home on the residential street, caved in the passenger-side door of the mangled Pontiac. Broken car parts lay strewn on the ground. Residents in the area told The Eagle the home was vacant but under renovation.

No one else was hurt and no other vehicles were hit, Prince said. Speed and alcohol intoxication may have contributed to the wreck, he said.
