Brutal, record-setting cold. Wind chills in the negative twenties.

Monday will be most unwelcoming in the Wichita area. Arriving on the heels of a glaze of ice and a few inches of fresh snow, Monday will be awash with polar air and strong north winds.

Lows were expected to topple the record of minus 2 set back in 1960. Highs are projected to reach the upper teens under sunny skies, forecasters say, with light north winds in the morning shifting to the south in the afternoon.

Overnight lows will only dip to the low teens, with light southerly winds pushing wind chills below 0. Tuesday is poised to see temperatures start a welcome rebound, forecasters say, with highs climbing to the upper 30s to low 40s as a few clouds dot the skies. But south winds will still push wind chills below 0 at times.

A chance of snow returns to the forecast on Wednesday, when highs are projected to reach the low 40s.
