The Thunder was unable to make an early two-goal lead hold up, losing 4-3 to the Missouri Mavericks in a Central Hockey League game on Saturday night in Independence, Mo.

Tomas Klempa scored on a penalty shot 2:39 into the first period, and RG Flath added a goal just more than two minutes later to give Wichita a 2-0 lead. The Mavericks scored late in the period to cut the margin to one, and tied the score 2-2 with a goal late in the second.

The back-breaker came midway through the third period when Sebastien Thinel scored a shorthanded goal to put Missouri ahead 3-2 — the third short-handed goal against the Thunder in the last four games.

The Mavericks added another score before Andrew Martens’ extra attacker goal in the final 20 seconds got the Thunder back within one.
