A man was seriously wounded late Friday morning in a shooting near Ninth and Grove in Wichita.
Wichita police Capt. Rusty Leeds said police received a report of a shooting shortly after 11 a.m.
When officers arrived they found a man lying on the sidewalk in front of his house on the west side of Grove south of Ninth. The man, whose age is estimated at 27, had been shot more than once, Leeds said.
The victim was taken to a local hospital and was undergoing surgery, Leeds said.
The wounds were “obviously serious,” Leeds said, but the victim was expected to survive. An update on his condition was not available Friday evening.
Witnesses reported seeing multiple people inside a primer-black truck from which shots were fired, but Leeds said investigators on Friday did not know how many people fired shots in the incident. Three men fled from the truck on foot, and the truck left the scene.
“We don’t know the motive, but we are continuing to investigate,” Leeds said.
Police were interviewing witnesses Friday.
“We have (police) dogs tracking through the neighborhood,” Leeds said, but there had been no calls to 911 from the area reporting suspicious activity or people running through yards immediately after the shooting.
Nearby Spaght Elementary School was placed on lockdown as a precaution, a district spokeswoman said, but the lockdown was lifted before 1 p.m.
