Friends women top Bethel in KCAC quarterfinals

The Friends women’s basketball team overcame a rough night on offense and beat Bethel 49-39 Wednesday night at Garvey Gymnasium in the quarterfinals of the KCAC Tournament.

Friends led 24-17 at halftime. The teams combined to shoot 26.8 percent (15 of 56) in the opening half.

The struggles continued in the second half — Friends took nearly five minutes to score as Bethel pulled within 24-23. Friends opened a seven-point lead but couldn’t knock out Bethel. The Threshers were within two points, 37-35, with 5:58 left. Sarah Munds scored five straight to keep the Falcons on top, and Friends help Bethel to four points in the final minutes.

Munds finished with 19 points and hit four three-pointers. Kayla Mollere added nine points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Friends shot 24.6 percent (16 of 65) but outreounded Bethel 55-34.

The second-seeded Falcons will play No. 3 Tabor on Saturday in the semifinals.

All-KCAC — Tabor senior Nikki Lewis was chosen KCAC player of the year. Lewis averaged 10.6 points, 6.9 assists and 2.3 steals. Southwestern, which went 18-0 in league play, landed sophomore Jessica Hobbs and junior Trinicia Shaffer on the All-KCAC team. Friends senior Sarah Munds and Ottawa senior Amber Ramsey rounded out the all-league team.
