WSU baseball suffers first loss

Eric Yavarone, who was hitless coming into the game, drove in the winning run with his third single in the 10th inning to give Connecticut a 2-1 victory over Wichita State on Friday night in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Shockers (4-1) scored in the first inning when Tyler Baker singled in Garrett Bayliff, who had doubled. WSU had runners at first and third with a run in but failed to score when Micah Green and Daniel Kihle flied out.

WSU had baserunners in every inning.

Ray Ashford took the loss, allowing his first run of the season in 5 1/3 innings. A.J. Ladwig started and went 6 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking one, and hasn’t allowed an earned run in 12 innings.

Saturday, the Shockers will face George Mason at 10 a.m. On Sunday, WSU will play Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m. On Monday, the Shockers face Coastal Carolina again at 3 p.m.

Casey Gillaspie had two hits in four at-bats with a walk.
