Ex-Washington coordinator becomes KU receivers coach

LAWRENCE — Charlie Weis’ tenure as Kansas receivers coach was short-lived.

Ten days after Weis assumed the post in addition to his head-coaching duties, KU announced the hiring of new receivers coach Eric Kiesau, who spent the two previous seasons as the offensive coordinator at Washington.

Technically, Kiesau replaces Weis, who on Feb. 10 reassigned former receivers coach Rob Ianello to an off-field role as director of research.

In a statement, Weis said new offensive coordinator John Reagan was the driving force behind adding Kiesau.

“When Coach (John) Reagan came to me with Eric’s name I was intrigued,” said Weis, KU’s third-year coach. “We’re very pleased to be able to add him to our staff. It is our good fortune that Washington experienced a staff transition at the same time we were looking for a receivers coach. Eric has experienced a great deal of success in exactly the position that we were looking for.”

Kiesau guided an offense that helped Washington finish 9-4 in 2013. He worked under coach Steve Sarkisian, who left to take the job at Southern Cal in December. Before spending two seasons at Washington, Kiesau worked as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at California for the 2011 campaign. He had previously worked on the staff at Cal from 2000-05 before spending 2006-10 at Colorado.

Kiesau takes over a position group that has been a glaring hole for Kansas during Weis’ first two seasons. The Jayhawks’ receivers failed to record a touchdown reception in 2012 before taking part in one of the worst passing offenses in the country this past season.
