A man killed Sunday while riding his all-terrain vehicle with friends at the Wichita-Valley Center Floodway has been identified.

Philipp L. Wellemeyer, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Sedgwick County sheriff’s records.

The accident happened at about 3 p.m. on Sunday in a posted area on the floodway near 7100 S. Grove.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Wellemeyer dead, another rider with minor injuries and a third who was uninjured, according to Sgt. Nathan Gibbs with the sheriff’s office.

The three friends had been riding on separate ATVs. The 25-year-old apparently did not see a small drainage ditch that feeds into the larger portion of the Big Ditch and crashed into it.
