Ciabattoni’s career night lifts Newman

Newman sophomore Alexandra Ciabattoni scored a career-high 39 points to lead the Jets to a 80-75 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday in Goodwell, Okla.

Ciabattoni shot 13 of 17 from the field and was 12 of 12 from the free-throw line. Ciabattoni’s previoius career high was 30 points in the season-opening win over Rockhurst. She also led the Jets with six rebounds. Mali Wright added a career-high 10 points in just 15 minutes for Newman (14-10, 11-7 Heartland).

OPSU led 67-64 with 6:09 left in the game, but Ciabattoni scored the next nine points to put the game out of reach.

Mitchell, NAIA Division II’s leading scorer and a Wichita Southeast product, was honored before the game for breaking the KCAC’s single-season scoring record.
