A 44-year-old Rice County man died Thursday after his car veered off K-14 near Lyons and struck a power pole.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said James Dean Belote, of Lyons, was driving south on the highway when his 1991 Chevy crossed the center line and went into a ditch. The passenger car traveled along the ditch, hit the pole, then traveled another 65 feet before stopping, according to the agency’s crash report.

Belote, who was alone in the car, was killed, KHP said. The wreck happened at 12:40 p.m.
