Jessica’s Law was used Wednesday in sentencing a Barber County man after he pleaded guilty to raping a 1-year-old girl.

Robert Pruitt of Kiowa, 22, was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole for 25 years District Court Judge Francis Meisenheimer, according to a release by Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt. Assistants from Schmidt’s office prosecuted the case.

Pruitt pleaded guilty in October to the rape that occurred in November 2012, the release said. The girl was one at the time, a spokesman for Schmidt’s office said.

He was also ordered by the judge to a lifetime of electronic monitoring and registration as a sex offender.

Kansas is among states that has adopted Jessica’s Law, which is the name given to laws that create stricter sentences for child sex offenders. The law came from a 2005 case in Florida.
