ESPN upgrades the Shockers
ESPN is preparing to cover Wichita States run at history. Its coverage, however, will not include bringing its College GameDay crew to Koch Arena for the regular-season finale.
Wichita States Feb. 25 game at Bradley will be on ESPN2, the network announced Tuesday. It had been scheduled for ESPN3, the networks Internet platform. Tip will move back one hour to 8 p.m.
WSU will appear on either ESPN or ESPN2 on March 1 in its regular-season finale against Missouri State at Koch Arena. The tip time has not been decided. The longer WSU goes unbeaten, the better chance it has at grabbing a spot on ESPN in an attractive time slot.
Also scheduled that day on ESPN are Cincinnati at UConn (11 a.m.), Illinois at Michigan State (1 p.m.), Syracuse at Virginia (3 p.m.), Kentucky at South Carolina (5 p.m.) and Kansas at Oklahoma State (8 p.m.). On ESPN2, Pittsburgh plays at Notre Dame (1 p.m.) and Saint Louis is at VCU (5 p.m.).
As a class project, a Sport Public Relations class at WSU launched a social media campaign asking ESPN to bring GameDay to WSU on March 1. The show will be in Stillwater that day to preview Kansas game at Oklahoma State. Given the proximity, the students hoped to use Twitter, Facebook, etc. to convince ESPN to split time between Stillwater and Wichita.
It wont happen, according to ESPN College Sports manager Rachel Margolis Siegal.
We will not move the College GameDay program to Wichita State, however, we will certainly monitor potential content for our platforms around the game as storylines develop, she wrote in an e-mail.
Big day in Bristol
WSU coach Gregg Marshall will fly to ESPNs headquarters in Bristol, Conn. on Wednesday for a marathon session with many of the networks outlets.
He is scheduled for an ESPN.com chat at 3:35 p.m with an appearance on PTI after. He is scheduled for a live shot on SportsCenter at 4:15, 5:40 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. After dinner in the ESPN Cafe, he will talk on the halftime show during the Pittsburgh-Syracuse game.
Radio and magazine interviews are also scheduled before his day at ESPN is finished.
WSU won its 13th straight MVC game, beating marks set by the 1982-83 team, which won 12 in a row on its way to a 17-1 MVC record, and the 1963-64 and 1964-65 teams, which won 12 in a row over two seasons. WSU has won eight of the past 10 games against SIU. WSUs bench outscored SIUs 26-14. Forward Darius Carter scored 12 points, his second straight game in double figures. Nick Wiggins scored 10. Shocker guard Fred VanVleet scored three points, matching his season low.
