Park City police know that Rebecca Stauder died from a gunshot wound as she sat in a truck next to I-135 at the exit for 53rd Street North last Friday night.

What they are still trying to figure out, Chief Phil Bostian said, is whether she committed suicide or someone else killed her.

“That’s why we’re still looking at it real hard,” Bostian said Tuesday afternoon.

Stauder, 43, went to a concert at Hartman Arena with a male acquaintance Friday night, he said. It was that man who called 911 at 11:44 p.m. Friday from the pickup on the highway to report that a woman who was in the truck with him had suffered a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

Police arrived four minutes later. Stauder was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck was parked on the shoulder of the southbound lanes at the top of the exit for 53rd Street.

The acquaintance was questioned by police and then released.

An autopsy has been completed, Bostian said, which confirms Stauder died of a gunshot wound. But it does not specify how she received the wound.

“I can’t rule one way or another” how she died, Bostian said. “It’s still actively under investigation.”
