Authorities destroyed a sick-looking coyote Sunday after it showed up behind a church in Arkansas City, police in that city said.

In an e-mail, Arkansas City police Capt. Mark McCaslin gave this account: On Sunday, the Police Department received several calls about a sick-looking animal in the area of Sixth Street and Maple Avenue. Officers found a coyote in the yard behind the Church of God in Christ.

Officers noted a number of unusual things about the coyote: It didn’t appear to show any fear toward humans; it was salivating a lot and walking in small circles before sitting down and eating snow; it couldn’t keep its head up and kept making bobbing movements as it sat; and it had a lot of discharge coming from its eyes.

Officers were concerned about the safety of the church congregation and nearby residents, among them young children, the police statement said.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks recommended that the animal be destroyed, the statement said, so “the decision was made to put the animal down in a humane manner, while keeping the neighborhood safe” and not putting officers at risk.
