Target in every gym

Wichita State guard Ron Baker is the top target of the opposing student section in every gym. On Saturday, the Panther students blew up a picture of Baker from his freshman year, when he sported a perm.

“It’s becoming a routine,” he said. “Everybody is trying to be funny on the road. It’s probably because I said I like playing on the road. They’re getting on me for saying that, I guess.”

His teammates expect Baker to take most of the abuse on the road.

“I knew they were going to say something crazy about Ron,” Tekele Cotton said. “They like to pick at him, especially when he had the perm.”

In the spotlight

The national media tracking the Shockers is growing with each win. It won’t slow down until they lose.

Thomas Lake of Sports Illustrated attended Wednesday’s game at Indiana State, driving from his home in Atlanta. He followed the team to Cedar Falls for Saturday’s game. Pat Borzi with The New York Times also attended. Last week, WSU players did phone interviews with the New York Post and New York Daily News.

Worth noting

WSU is the highest-ranked team to play in Cedar Falls. … UNI leads the series 25-24 and 15-8 in Cedar Falls. WSU is 4-4 in the McLeod Center, which opened for the 2006-07 season. Indiana State is also 4-4 and the other MVC teams own a losing record. … WSU committed 15 turnovers, its sixth straight game with 10 or more.
