House fire during snowstorm

A fire during Tuesday morning's snow storm caused about $50,000 in damage to a house under renovation in the 500 block of North Volutsia, near Central and Hillside.

A fire Tuesday morning caused about $50,000 in damage to a house under renovation in the 500 block of North Volutsia, near Central and Hillside, a fire official said.

No one was home, said fire Battalion Chief John Turner.

A passing motorist reported the fire at around 7:45 a.m.

Heavy snowfall on roadways slowed the initial fire crew by two to three minutes and support crews by significantly longer, Turner said.

Crews found heavy flames when they arrived; firefighters then got the fire under control. It was too early to determine the cause.

Turner said that motorists staying off the snow-covered streets could help firefighters respond to emergencies.
