A man walking home from a shopping trip at a local Family Dollar store was beaten unconscious and had his groceries stolen this week, Wichita police said Saturday.

The man, 43, told authorities his attacker approached him from behind as he walked around 9 p.m. Thursday in the 700 block of South Mission, Wichita police Sgt. Ron Hunt said. That’s just northeast of the store, at Lincoln and Woodlawn.

“He was hit in the head, then knocked to the ground,” Hunt said. “ ... He fell to his knees and was hit in the back of the head again, causing him to lose consciousness.”

When the man awoke, his groceries were gone. He also “was seemingly beaten while he was on the ground,” Hunt said.

Police say the man heard a male voice during the attack but did not see the robber. Hunt did not know the extent of the victim’s injuries.
