Police have arrested the parents of an infant brought to a local hospital after he became unresponsive at home earlier this week.

The pair was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of child abuse. They were arrested after being interrogated at the Exploited and Missing Child Unit, according to police records.

The 3-month-old boy has “very serious and severe internal injuries,” Capt. Brent Allred said. He was taken to Wesley Medical Center on Tuesday night from a house in the 300 block of North Parkdale Court, Allred said. That’s southwest of Central and Maize Road.

His parents, a 28-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man, had moved there from Hutchinson three weeks ago to live with the mother’s parents, Allred said. According to jail records, Aaron Piland, 26, and Christina Schulte, 28, were arrested.

The mother initially told doctors at the hospital that her son became unresponsive after a bath, police have said, but the child’s injuries are inconsistent with what doctors were told. The boy has internal head injuries as well as injuries elsewhere, Allred said.

A 3-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy also in the care of the arrested pair have been placed in protective custody by police, Allred said.

Piland faces a charge of misdemeanor theft in Reno County in an incident that took place on Dec. 2. He was released on his own recognizance two days later.

He has a pretrial hearing in that case scheduled for Feb. 6 in Hutchinson.
