Fireworks mortar shell tossed from vehicle damages house, car

Police and fire investigators are trying to figure out who threw a lit fireworks mortar shell at a house in south Wichita on Sunday night, damaging the house as well as a car parked next to it.

The incident was reported shortly before 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the 600 block of South Belmont, Lt. Doug Nolte said. That’s southwest of Kellogg and Oliver.

The 34-year-old woman told police she heard a boom and saw a white flash outside her house, Nolte said. She noticed her lawn was on fire, so she called 911.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire but noticed the damage and alerted police when witnesses told them “some sort of explosion” occurred outside the house, Nolte said.

Someone apparently lit a fireworks mortar shell and threw it at the house from a vehicle driving by the house, fire Lt. Troy Thissen said. The shell caused about $1,000 in damage to the house and to a car parked in the driveway.

“At this point, we don’t have any suspects,” Nolte said.

Police are looking for a white Ford truck that was driving carelessly in the area at about the same time, Nolte said.

More fireworks were fired at the house at about 3 a.m. Monday, he said. No damage was reported in that incident.

Depending on the size of fireworks, it can also be determined that they qualify as “an explosive device, which can up the ante and be more serious in nature,” Thissen said.

The woman who lives at the house was not injured in either incident, Nolte said.
