Andrew Wiggins was selected Big 12 newcomer of the week on Monday, the third straight week a Jayhawks freshman has kept the honor in Lawrence. Wiggins averaged 22.0 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 55 percent in two KU victories, propelling the Jayhawks to a 6-0 start in the Big 12.

Wiggins’ week included a career-high 27-point performance in a victory at TCU on Saturday night. He had 19 points before halftime.

“I just thought he played the way he should play every game,” KU coach Bill Self said on Saturday night. “I don’t think he’s going to score 19 in a half every game, obviously. But I thought, without question, that he didn’t do anything tonight that he couldn’t do in any game.”

It was the second time this season that Wiggins, a 6-foot-8 wing, has earned the newcomer of the week honor. He also claimed the award on Nov. 18, days after leading KU to a victory over Duke at the Champions Classic in Chicago.

Freshman center Joel Embiid earned the award last week, while freshman guard Wayne Selden claimed newcomer of the week honors on Jan. 13.

Texas sophomore center Cameron Ridley was selected as the Big 12 player of the week. The Jayhawks will travel to face Texas on Saturday in Austin.
