Wichita police are investigating an early Sunday morning burglary of a Wichita restaurant.

The incident happened at 4:20 a.m. Sunday in the 3300 block of North Broadway, according to Sgt. John Hoofer, spokesman for the Wichita Police Department.

A burglar threw an object through the front door of the restaurant, gained entry and then took a cash register before leaving.

“There was a very minor loss at that location,” Hoofer said but added the burglary seems to be part of a “smash and grab problem” recently plaguing some businesses in recent weeks. At least three have occurred in two weeks.

“We go in phases where we will see people smashing out windows or doors and then they will run in and take cash,” he said. “Very few business owners ever leave anything in the cash registers.”

Hoofer said it doesn’t appear to be any real pattern.

“I am sure intelligence officers are working on that and looking at hot spots,” he said.
