The 2014 car show season is off and running, with the Starbird-Devlin Rod & Customs Charities Car Show in Century II sounding the opening gun last weekend.

As usual, there were so many show-quality cars entered that to do it justice, you would almost have had to attend all three days of the event.

“We were very happy with the turnout. It was really steady and we had a great cross-section of cars,” said Carl Fry, one of the show organizers. More than 50 awards were handed out at the closing ceremony, with the Magnificent 7 judging honoring the best of the best.

John Bedenbend of Mt. Vernon, Texas, took home third place in the “Mag 7” with his 1962 Chevy Impala; Pat Holmes’ gorgeous green ’48 Chevy pickup from Lincoln, Neb., took the runner-up trophy in the category.

Alan Beers’ stunning silver ’57 Chevy full custom pickup from Owasso, Okla., wound up winning the first place Magnificent 7 trophy and the $5,000 first prize. A complete list of class winners is available with the online version of this story at Kansas.com.

The Wichita On Wheels page was again honored to be allowed to pick a favorite from the more than 300 vehicles on display. We chose Derrel Bosley’s traditional 1932 Ford hiboy roadster, finished in bright red and rolling on old-school steel wheels. That means if Derrel agrees, we will feature his car in an upcoming issue of Wichita On Wheels.
