A Winfield High School student died after becoming ill during cheer practice late Thursday afternoon, an official said Friday.

Staff immediately responded and called for emergency assistance, and the student was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she later died, said Winfield schools superintendent J.K. Campbell.

Campbell declined to give the cheerleader’s name and said that out of respect for her family, he could provide no details about the incident.

“She was a very beautiful and bright young person, and obviously this is a very difficult time for students and staff and our community,” Campbell said.

Grief counselors were available to students and staff on Friday and probably will be available next week, he said.

“We are thinking about the family and the difficult time they are having.”
