Cuyler helps Newman top Lubbock Christian

Marquis Cuyler scored eight of Newman’s final 10 points to help the Jets beat Lubbock Christian 76-74 on Thursday night at Fugate Gymnasium.

Cuyler’s three-pointer gave Newman a 71-70 lead with 1:46 left in the game. He made two free throws with 21 seconds left to make it 73-72, Landers Riddle hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to give the Jets a three-point edge, and a Cuyler free throw with six seconds left made it 76-74.

Cuyler scored 18 for Newman (6-11, 3-6 Heartland).

Lubbock Christian women 73, Newman 68 — League-leading Lubbock Christian (16-1, 11-0 Heartland) trailed by 1 at halftime, and didn’t take the lead for good until a layup by Kaycice Boyoles gave it a 58-56 lead with 6:37 remaining. Newman (9-9, 6-6) cut the lead to one point twice in the final minutes, but never regained the lead.

Alexandra Ciabattoni hit 11 of 15 shots and scored a game-high 25 points for Newman, and Shekeira Copeland added 16.
