A Liberal man died Wednesdy when his vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and was crushed by a semi along U.S. 83 in Seward County, the Kansas Highway Patrol said in a crash report.

Stanley H. Wilbers, 80, was driving the 2010 Toyota Tacoma south on the highway when he crossed the center line shortly after 5 a.m., the highway patrol said. The semi driver tried to avoid a collision, according to the report, but Wilbers’ vehicle reportedly struck the big rig behind the front tire on the driver’s side.

The semi “appeared to drive over (Wilbers’) vehicle,” according to the report.

Wilbers, who was alone in the Tacoma, was killed in the crash. The 27-year-old semi driver, Marco Covarrubias-Esparza of Liberal, was not hurt.

The collision occurred 3 1/2 miles north of Liberal, the highway patrol said.
