Security beefed up at South High after rumors of violence

Rumors of potential violence posted on social media prompted South High School to take extra security measures Thursday, Wichita district officials said.

School district spokeswoman Susan Arensman said the social media chatter seemed to have started after an off-campus fight Wednesday that involved South High students.

In a note to parents Thursday, South High principal Cara Ledy said the social media messages “caused a significant disruption to our school day.” Additional security measures included additional Wichita police officers at the school, she said.

“Even though this was just a rumor, we take school safety very seriously,” Ledy said in the note. “The students involved will face disciplinary action and the spreading of rumors and threats through social media or any other means will not be tolerated.”
