MLK Day Event

What: A citywide celebration honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

When: Monday, noon

Where: Wichita State University’s Hughes Metropolitan Complex, 29th Street North and Oliver

Featured speaker: University of Kansas Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little. U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo and Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer also are scheduled to speak.

Friends University staff and students will gather Monday to clean up parts of the Delano district in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

The service project, funded by a $500 grant from the Kansas Volunteer Commission, is being held in association with Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service and United We Serve. Participants will pick up trash near the railroad crossing and remove graffiti from area businesses.

Friends residential development coordinator Brett McLaughlin said the Delano area was chosen because of its proximity to Friends University.

“It’s our neighborhood,” McLaughlin said. “We want to keep it clean.”

McLaughlin expects the event to draw anywhere from 60 to 70 people.

“I will be happy with 50, though,” he said.

The project is open to any interested person within the Friends community. Participants are invited to lunch at 11:45 a.m. in the Casado Atrium located in the Marriage and Family Therapy facility.

Participants who are not able to attend the lunch should plan to show up at the Atrium before 1 p.m. The cleanup will be held from 1 to 4 p.m.
