State colleges Sterling hands Friends its first KCAC loss

Braden Thompson scored 32 points to help Sterling beat Friends 91-87 of Saturday night in Sterling, the Falcons’ first conference loss of the season.

Friends led 45-35 at halftime, but Sterling shot 61 percent in the second half. Thompson hit five three-pointers, and Eddie Adesodun made all 15 of his free-throw attempts and finished with 26 points for Sterling (14-5, 6-2 KCAC).

Joe Mitchell had 44 points and nine rebounds for Friends (16-3, 7-1), and Zach NElson scored 16 points.

OCC men 85, Newman 76 — Oklahoma Christian overcame a 23-point, 10-rebound game by Newman’s Jeremy Espinoza and handed the Jets in Oklahoma City.

Newman (5-11, 2-6) shot 27.6 percent from the field and trailed 49-27 at the break. The Jets warmed up in the second half (53.1 percent) to outscore the hosts 49-36.

Elhad Emerllahu added 13 points and six rebounds for Newman.

OCC (7-8, 3-4) hit 45 percent from the field and connected on 16 of 18 free throws.
