Wichita’s parks department will launch conservation burns in several local parks this month, continuing through March.

The affected parks include Chisholm Creek, Dr. Glen Dey, Meadows, Pawnee Prairie and Swanson. Burn dates are pending.

The prescribed grass burns will control invasive species, remove dead material from the grassland and return nutrients to the soil. The burns also reduce wildfire risk by reducing the amount of fuel in a prairie.

The burns will occur under guidelines from the city’s fire department and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Questions about the burns should be directed to the Great Plains Nature Center, 316-683-5499, or city park operations at 316-350-3171.
