Newman, Friends pick up road wins

Marquis Cuyler paced a hot-shooting Newman team to a 91-76 Heartland Conference victory over Dallas Baptist on Thursday night in Dallas.

Cuyler notched a double-double, getting 22 points and 10 rebounds. Cuyler hit all three of his three-point attempts.

Newman (5-10, 2-5 Heartland) wiped out a one-point halftime deficit by going 8 for 9 in the second half from three-point range.

For the game, the Jets shot a season-best 65.4 percent from the field. In the first half, Newman was 16-24 (66.67) and 18-28 (64.29) in the second half.

Trae Beck added 15 points for Newman, going 5 of 6 from three-point range.

“We needed this win to get back into the conference race,” Newman coach Mark Potter said. “We need to get to fourth place to qualify for the playoff and fourth place right now is 3-2.”

Friends routs Bethel — Joe Mitchell scored 27 points in 25 minutes as Friends beat Bethel 102-47 in North Newton for their 16th consecutive win.

Colton Rausch added 15 points for Friends. All 14 Falcons players scored.

Friends (16-4, 7-0 KCAC) plays at Sterling on Saturday.

Senior Sarah Munds scored a game-high 21 points and junior Kayla Mollere had 17 points and 11 rebounds as Friends improved to 15-4, 6-1 in the KCAC.
