— A Topeka teenager is charged with soliciting first-degree murder as part of an alleged plan to shoot two Topeka West High School administrators, a city police officer and an officer at the school, a prosecutor said Wednesday.

The 17-year-old is accused of trying to encourage three other individuals to help with the plot but he had no co-conspirators, Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor said at a news conference to announce the charges.

The boy, who was arrested Tuesday, was scheduled for a detention hearing later Wednesday. He is charged as a juvenile but Taylor said he would try to have him charged as an adult.

Taylor declined to release many other details of the alleged plot. He said the investigation began in mid-December after authorities received a tip and the plot was stopped early in the investigation.

“Make no mistake about it, this was a crisis averted,” Taylor said.

The suspect was not in Topeka during most of the investigation and was arrested while he was out of the city, although Taylor would not say where.

Two concerned parents of Topeka West students who attended the news conference said they had not heard about the alleged plot from either school administrators or their children and became aware of it only after seeing online reports Wednesday.

“It’s very scary,” said Rebecca Miller, the mother of a senior at West High School.

A spokesman for Topeka public schools referred all questions about the case to Taylor.
