A 54-year-old man was arrested Monday night after he fired his shotgun into the air several times after a friend came to check on him, police said.

The incident unfolded shortly before 10 p.m. in the 300 block of South Zelta, Lt. Doug Nolte said. That’s northeast of Kellogg and Greenwich Road in east Wichita.

Two people who know the man went to check on his welfare, Nolte said.

“The friend was intoxicated and had a shotgun with him,” he said.

The suspect became upset with the visitors and shoved one of the visitors, a 19-year-old woman, in the chest. He then fired several shots into the air while in front of his house, Nolte said.

Police were notified. They found the shotgun as well as marijuana and drug paraphernalia in plain view, Nolte said.

The man was booked into jail on suspicion of offenses that included aggravated battery and criminal possession of a firearm.
