Kansans can now receive Twitter updates on missing children in the area.

The Twitter account, @AMBERAlert, will provide followers with updates on the status on missing persons in Kansas and across the country. The account was launched this week in honor of National Amber Alert Awareness Day.

“When a child is missing, the public’s assistance is crucial to returning the child safely,” Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said in a statement Tuesday. “Social media provides us a new way to get information out quickly to the public in the event of an Amber Alert.”

The Twitter account will be managed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The Kansas Amber Alert system is coordinated by the Kansas Attorney General’s Office and Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

The Amber Alert Program, founded in 1996, is a voluntary partnership between law enforcement agencies, broadcasters and transportation agencies to activate an urgent bulletin in the most serious child-abduction cases. The program has successfully brought 679 children home safely nationwide, according to a news release from Schmidt’s office.

Since 2002, 23 Kansas children have been returned safely.

Kansans can also receive Amber Alerts on Facebook by liking the Kansas Amber Alert page at www.facebook.com/AMBERalertKS.
