A man is in serious condition at a Wichita hospital after accidentally shooting himself Saturday morning in rural Reno County.

James D. Meyer, 52, was setting up to do some reloading on his .40 caliber handgun shortly before 9 a.m. in the 11000 block of Paney Circle Drive. He attempted to remove a magazine from the gun when it discharged, hitting his upper left leg.

His brother, who was in the same room, called 911 and began treating Meyer until EMS arrived, according to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office.

Meyer was taken to Via Christi St. Francis in serious condition.

The shooting is being investigated as accidental.
