Wichita police on Friday arrested a teen who took a homemade explosive to school.

Wichita public schools spokeswoman Susan Arensman said officials at Sowers Alternative High School, 2400 E. Wassall, alerted police when a student was found with a “small, suspicious-looking package” Friday. He was taken into custody and the device removed from school grounds, she said, following a police investigation.

“There were no threats made against the school until after he was in custody,” Arensman said.

The student is facing disciplinary action by the school, Arensman said. Possible criminal charges, she said, will be up to the Sedgwick County district attorney.

Sowers serves high school students who have “significant social/emotional needs” and those at risk of suspension or expulsion, according to the school’s website. It’s in southeast Wichita along I-135, south of Pawnee.
