A Wellington man was sentenced Thursday to nearly 19 years in prison after pleading no contest to a charge of second-degree murder of a toddler.

Spencer Weikal, 25, was sentenced to 227 months in prison by Sumner County District Judge William Mott, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said in a news release. Weikal pleaded no contest in November to charges of second-degree murder, child abuse and child endangerment in the death of 2-year-old Larrissa Foster.

The child died in December 2011 in a Wichita hospital of severe head trauma, Wellington authorities have said. Weikal had been identified by Wellington police as the boyfriend of the child’s mother.

He was originally charged with first-degree murder.
