Goggles

Kansas freshman center Joel Embiid idolizes and studies film of NBA Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon. But Embiid wasn’t too happy that he kind of looked like Olajuwon on Wednesday night while wearing a set of protective goggles. (The goggles were an 1980s Olajuwon trademark.)

Embiid was forced to wear them after injuring his left eye in practice earlier in the week. He caught a blow from transfer forward Hunter Mickelson during practice, and his eye was still swollen on Wednesday. Embiid scored six points and grabbed six rebounds in 19 minutes against Oklahoma. Embiid said he would likely wear them again on Saturday against K-State.

“I can see,” Embiid said. “There is no major injury.”

Worth noting

Kansas coach Bill Self went to freshman guard Conner Frankamp before Wednesday’s game and offered a warning: Be ready. After playing Frankamp sparingly in the previous month, Self believed the freshman guard would match up well with Oklahoma, a team that played two smaller guards. Frankamp finished with five points, including a three-pointer, while playing 13 minutes — his most minutes since the season-opener against Louisiana Monroe. “I felt like I played pretty good tonight,” Frankamp said. “I got a lot more comfortable out there, so that was good.”… KU now enters a difficult four-game stretch: After playing No. 25 Kansas State on Saturday, the Jayhawks will play at No. 9 Iowa State and face No. 7 Baylor and No. 11 Oklahoma State at home in a two-week span.
