Hutch insurance brokerage plans to double Wichita office space

About four years after entering Wichita, Hutchinson-based Fee Insurance Group is planning an expansion of its office here.

John Baker, who heads Fee’s Wichita office, said Wednesday that the company will move from a 1,200-square-foot suite in the Central Bank and Trust building in Wilson Estates Office Park to a 2,500-square-foot suite in the Capitol Federal building, which is in the same park just south of 21st and east of Rock Road.

The Central Bank space has been “a great place for us,” said Allen Fee, president of the insurance brokerage. “It’s just that we had grown to a level where we have more traffic with insurance carriers and clients that we needed … more space.”

Baker said in 2013 the Wichita office hired two people, bringing its total staff to three, and he expects to have eight to 12 employees by the end of this year.

He said he hopes to occupy the new office, which will be Suite 250 on the second floor of the Capitol Federal building, by Feb. 1.

Baker, who has 25 years’ experience in the insurance business, including working at IMA and Willis, said the company has been successful winning new business from middle-market companies in Wichita. He defines middle-market as companies that pay up to $500,000 in annual insurance premiums. It also provides personal lines of insurance to business owners and professionals such as physicians, he said.

Fee, the brokerage’s third-generation leader, said when the firm was looking to expand its territory, Wichita was a “natural place for us to grow.”

“The insurance business is a relationship business,” Fee said. “I think you can be successful wherever you are. While it is competitive in Wichita, there is a lot of opportunity as well.”

Fee also operates offices in McPherson and Salina.

Baker said the owner of the building, Vantage Point Properties, was willing to work with the company and is in the process of updating and furnishing the new office space. Fee said his company signed a five-year lease on the new suite.
