Phone scam targets older residents in Derby

Derby police officials say scam artists are targeting local senior citizens.

Someone impersonating a Derby Senior Center employee is calling seniors and asking for money over the telephone, Chief Robert Lee said.

Residents who receive a call like this should hang up and call 911 to make a report. If they have caller ID they should write down the number the call came from and give it to the dispatcher.

"It's important never to give out personal information or credit card information over the telephone to someone you don't know, even if they sound legitimate," Lee said in a prepared statement.
