  • Published Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at 10:17 a.m.

Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

For a complete list of You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.

The record: Accident statistics kept by the Kansas Department of Transportation

Why you’d want it: To learn more about what factors cause accidents

Where you get it: Go to www.ksdot.org. Click on the “Traffic Safety” link on the home page. Then click on the “Traffic Records” link. Finally, click on the “Accident Statistics” link. You’ll find information about when and where accidents occurred and factors contributing to why they occurred. Information goes back to 2000. The most recent statistics are from 2010.

How much it will cost: The information is free.
